KUAAP Welcomed New Jayhawks for the Fall Semester: Orientation Recap
The KUAAP staff were excited to greet new students as they arrived in waves beginning on August 8 and dived into a 10 day KU international new student orientation. We welcomed more than 130 students for the fall semester from ten countries: China, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Haiti, South Korea, India, Colombia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh.
Starting on day one, the KUAAP staff and student ambassadors helped our new Jayhawks find their residence hall rooms and gave them their orientation materials and their first KU gear.
We celebrated everyone’s arrival on August 8 by hosting a dinner before students turned in to begin recovering from jet lag.
Throughout the week, students attended sessions to help them get acclimated to KU’s campus, tour their new city, Lawrence, and check-in with immigration and health services. KUAAP held sessions about program expectations, culture shock, KU glossary of acronyms, icebreakers and how to prepare for the English language and math entrance exams on campus.
We ended the orientation with a special evening event in a location just off campus that boasted gorgeous views of KU and Lawrence. The event offered a variety of desserts, board and card games, and live music to help students wind down from the busy week and begin settling into their home away from home.
