Meet the Team: Rachel Davis
Rachel Davis is our career accelerator program (CAP) advisor.
She holds a Master’s in Higher Education from Louisiana State University (LSU). While a graduate student, she worked as a teaching assistant for Strategic Career Development and as a graduate assistant on the Job Search team at the Louisiana State University Olinde Career Center. After graduating in 2016, she joined the LSU staff as a Career Coach working with students in the E.J. Ourso College of Business. Now, she is thrilled to be back in the Midwest working with the KU AAP students. We sat down with her to learn more about her. Here’s what she had to say…
As a CAP advisor, tell us more about what you do.
In my role as CAP advisor, I meet with students in and out of the classroom to help guide them through the career development process. From the big questions like, “What do I want to do when I graduate?” to the little details of resumes and interviews, I’m here to help every step of the way as they search for the right career for them. I also facilitate sessions to help prepare students to attend career fairs, career readiness workshops, such as resume writing, host an American etiquette luncheon, and I teach a few courses in the UNIV (Live, Learn, Grow) classes about career assessments and University Career Center services.
What advice would you give to a student looking for an internship or full-time position?
Come talk to me! We can figure out the best places to look for positions, how best to market yourself in your application materials, and how to make a good impression in the interview process. I’d also recommend using your time at KU to the fullest to build up your resume, which means getting involved in student organizations, volunteering, and learning more about your strengths.
What advice would you give to a Freshman who is still figuring out what they want to major in or do as a career?
Choosing a major or a career can be a really tough process. Thankfully, we have several assessments that can help you see how your personality, interests, and skills match up to a career or major. In addition to assessments, you can research careers online, shadow someone in a career of interest, and talk to people in the field in which you’re interested.
Have you travelled or worked abroad? If so, where and tell me more about your experience.
I’ve travelled to several countries including Canada, France, Scotland, Ireland, England, Iceland, and Greenland. Some of my favorite places I’ve visited are Shakespeare and Company in Paris, the Montreal Botanical Garden, and Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh.
Where is your favorite place to go in Lawrence?
I’ve really enjoyed exploring the city. It has lots of good food, live music, and fun shops to visit (and not just on Mass Street!). I’m looking forward to the weather warming up to enjoy the walking trails, parks, and outdoor events around town.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not at work?
I enjoy baking, watching T.V., going on walks with my husband and our dog, and seeing standup comedy performances when I can.
