Shadowing Professionals Gives Students a Glimpse of Life After Graduation
Students had an opportunity to get a sneak peek of what it could be like in the working world. Six KU Career Accelerator Program students attended a Nonprofit Connect Shadow Day in Kansas City, Missouri, only 45 minutes by car or by bus from Lawrence.
Students from more than eleven Kansas and Missouri universities gathered at the Kauffman Foundation for breakfast and an introduction presentation to learn more about the expectations of the program.
“It was a wonderful experience to be able to learn about a non-profit organization such as the Kauffman Foundation and how amazing it works,” states Vivian.
Nonprofit Connect Shadow day matches college students with local nonprofit professionals for a day of learning and networking.
This year, more than fifty nonprofits opened their doors for students.
Our six KU students were matched with the Kansas City Zoo, Hillcrest Hope, Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, International Association of Assessing Officers, KC Pet Project, and the Kauffman Foundation.
“I shadowed the Director of Operations, but I not only learned about what he did but also other positions.” “My favorite part of the day is when I learned about the Director of Operations job because I saw evidence of his work which includes the formation and design in the Kauffman Foundation such as the park, dining room, etc,” said Vivian.
Most of the students spent their day learning about the organization’s mission and how each sector works in order to accomplish its goals and mission.
At the KC Pet Project, Joan David, who shadowed the marketing director was able to put into action how a marketing department best utilizes its tools by creating an Instagram story using their best models – their puppies and kittens who are ready for adoption.
“I would recommend people to participate in this event and if I have the opportunity, I will join the event again,” states Vivian.
The AAP Career Accelerator Program hosts several events and workshops each semester to help students prepare for their future career. Learn more about the Career Accelerator Program.
